Sport and Performance

Mental skills are developed, not discovered. That belief sits at the foundation of everything we do in Sport and Performance Psychology at Dunthorne Psychological Services. We work with athletes, coaches, and high performers to build those skills intentionally and put them to work where it counts.

What It Is

Sport and Performance Psychology is the study and application of psychological principles to help individuals perform at their best in competitive and high-demand environments. At Dunthorne Psychological Services, we work with athletes, coaches, and high performers across disciplines to develop the mental skills that consistent performance demands. Focus, confidence, resilience, and composure are not fixed traits. They are skills that can be built, refined, and put to work where it matters most.

Who It Is For

This work is designed for anyone who is serious about the mental side of their performance. If you find yourself performing below your ability under pressure, losing confidence after a setback, struggling to stay focused when it counts, or feeling the emotional weight of competition and expectations, this work is for you. It is also for those who are already performing well and want to take their game to the next level. From young athletes just beginning their competitive journey to seasoned professionals at the peak of their careers, our work is always individualized and always built around you.

How We Can Help

The Dunthorne Difference

What sets our Sport and Performance Psychology work apart is the foundation on which it is built. Most practitioners focus on either performance skills or mental health. At Dunthorne Psychological Services, we work at the intersection of both, which means our clients never have to choose between excelling in their field and thriving as a person. Here is what that looks like in practice.

Evidence-Based Skill Development

Every strategy and technique we use is grounded in psychological research and empirically supported methods. Mental skills training is not intuition-based or anecdotal. It is rigorous, informed by the latest science, and designed to produce real and measurable results in your specific performance environment.

The Collaborative Relationship

The quality of the work depends entirely on the quality of the relationship. We do not hand clients a program and send them on their way. We build genuine partnerships grounded in trust, honesty, and a shared commitment to the work. Progress is something we pursue together from the first conversation forward.

Performance and Wellness Integration

Performance and well-being are not separate conversations. They are treated as deeply interconnected from the very beginning. We help clients develop the mental skills to perform at their best while also addressing the psychological and emotional demands that high performance places on a person over time. Both matter and both receive the same level of attention and care.

Centered on the Individual Person

No two athletes, coaches, or high performers are the same, and no two engagements at Dunthorne Psychological Services are the same. Our work is organized entirely around your specific needs, your goals, and where you are in your journey. We ask the right questions, listen carefully, and build something that is genuinely yours rather than adapted from a template. The work evolves as you evolve.

Individual Sessions

Individual sessions at Dunthorne Psychological Services are designed to be focused, purposeful, and built around what you are working toward. Each session typically runs 50 minutes and is structured around your current goals, challenges, and progress. We begin by getting to know you. Understanding who you are, what you are navigating, and what success looks like for you specifically. From there, sessions are collaborative by nature, part reflection, part skill building, and part strategic planning, depending on where you are in the process. Most clients meet weekly or biweekly, though the cadence is always adjusted to fit your schedule and the demands of your season or professional life. The work does not stay in the session. You will leave each meeting with something concrete to take into your performance environment, whether that is a mental skill to practice, a strategy to apply, or simply a clearer understanding of what is getting in the way.
